Academically, Dr. Masica Jordan Alston graduated from the University of Maryland’s Bowie State University in 2003 with a B.S. in Sociology and in 2005 with an M.A. in Counseling Psychology. Thereafter, she completed a Doctorate of Education in Counseling/Psychology in 2010. At the national policy level, in 2018 Dr. Jordan Alston provided expert testimony to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on removing barriers for individuals recovering from substance use disorders to access employment and build sustainable futures. As a result, her insights influenced national discussions on workforce inclusion for people in recovery. Subsequently, in 2020, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recognized her as one of the top 10% of innovators in recovery in America for developing programs and products that empower people in recovery to successfully reenter the workforce.
In parallel with her policy and workforce efforts, Dr. Jordan Alston is the co-founder of Black Wall Street AVL, a nationally acclaimed initiative designed to support minority entrepreneurs, including justice-impacted individuals. In recognition of this transformative work, she received a national award from the Truist Foundation in 2022, after leading a Black Wall Street cohort of returning citizens who collectively generated over $1 million in revenue within one year.
